Most insurance agents will tell you they're different. Shay Greene will tell you she's been the client — and she didn't know what she was buying.

She's had a car accident that cleaned her out because she chose the cheapest policy without reading it. She's watched her duplex flood and learned the hard way that renters insurance doesn't cover acts of God. She still has the video on her phone. It still pops up in her Facebook memories. And every single time she sits down with a new client, she thinks about it.

"I don't want you to be where I was," she says simply. That sentence is the entire philosophy of SKG Insurance.

Shay is the founder of SKG Insurance, operating under Main Street Independent Insurance Agencies, Inc. She is an independent agent with access to 26+ top-rated carriers — Progressive, GEICO, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Foremost, Hagerty, CHUBB, and more. She serves all of Texas. And she opened her agency on April 6, 2025, after one of the most demanding seasons of her life.

We sat down with her for a DFW Local Experts member interview. What she shared was far bigger than an insurance pitch.

FOUND AT A CASH REGISTER, BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP

Shay didn't plan to be in insurance. She was working two jobs — a vacation club during the day and Ulta Beauty at night — when a woman she checked out at the register stopped and said: "I love your energy. Would you come work for me?"

Shay didn't even remember her. But months later, tired of jobs that didn't fit, she went on Indeed looking for a receptionist position. The listing that caught her eye was for a Farmers Insurance agency in Crowley — the same woman's office.

"She was like, hey, do you remember me? And I was like, not really. And she said, I tried to reach out to you about a position. And I was like, that's so crazy. Now we're here."

She started as a receptionist. Within months, her manager asked if she'd ever considered getting her license. Shay's first reaction was resistance — she didn't have insurance herself at the time. "How am I supposed to help other people get it?" But her manager paid for her licensing anyway. And then something clicked.

Shay didn't stop at the basic personal lines license. On her own time, she went and earned her Life, Health, and HMO licenses too. "I don't care to be just average. I want to go above and beyond. I want to be great." She has held that standard through every role since — Farmers, Allstate, multiple agencies — building her knowledge, her clientele, and her reputation, even when the circumstances around her were difficult.

In 2021, she took her biggest swing yet: becoming a Farmers agency owner herself — the first Black woman agent in her district. The timing was brutal. It was the height of COVID. She was newly married with two young kids — her daughter was 7 and her son was 5. The infrastructure of running an agency — the things nobody had prepared her for — came all at once. That chapter didn't end the way she hoped.

But Shay is not someone who lets a hard chapter write the whole story.

INSURANCE WITH INTENT — A TAGLINE WITH REAL MEANING

When Shay launched SKG Insurance this spring, she didn't just pick a tagline. She chose a declaration.

"Insurance with Intent. Service with Soul. That has a real meaning behind it. I want to help people. I've been through a lot in the last five years, and that shaped who I am today. I want to bring that to others."

The years between that first agency and this one were not easy. Shay went through a divorce, hospitalizations, and two suicide attempts in 2022 and 2023 that she has chosen to speak openly about — because that honesty is part of who she is and why her work matters so much to her now.

She credits much of her recovery and her return to faith to the person she calls BK — her partner of three years who has been her rock through every transition. When Shay considered walking away from agency ownership entirely and taking a salaried job, it was BK who stopped her cold.

"He was like, 'Um, no. You're a whole boss. You will not work for breadcrumbs and kibbles and bits.' And that was the push I needed."

She means it when she says Insurance with Intent. It didn't come from a marketing brainstorm. It came from surviving something, finding her faith again, and deciding that the version of herself on the other side of all of it was going to do things differently — with purpose, with heart, and without apology.

The "intent" isn't marketing language. It's the opposite of how Shay describes the agencies she's worked in over the years — offices where agents were measured by volume, where clients were numbers, where the goal was sell and move on. She watched it for years and knew she wanted something different.

"I worked in offices where the agent was once a salesperson, and that was their motto: sell, sell, sell. People were just numbers. I don't want you to be just a number. Not with me."

So she doesn't advertise being the cheapest. She doesn't respond to Facebook group posts asking for the lowest rate. She has made peace with the fact that her ideal client is someone who wants to understand what they're buying — and trusts her to help them do that.

"A lot of times I'm not the cheapest. But when they sign up with me, knowing I'm not the cheapest — that means they trust me. That does it for me."

The two people Shay shows up for every single day.

THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE: RELATIONSHIP FIRST, POLICY SECOND

Shay's approach to every client interaction starts with a simple premise: in order to protect you properly, I have to know you. Not your policy number. You.

She asks about your family. Your kids. What you want your life to look like. She remembers birthdays. She sends cards. She has become genuine friends with clients she met at her very first Farmers job — and she's about to write a policy for one of their children.

"I don't want to just take your money and then in three or four months, hey — who are you? Why are you calling me? No. I want you to know who I am, just like I want to know who you are."

She is also radically honest. She will tell you when a policy isn't the right fit. She will explain what renters insurance actually covers — and what it doesn't. She won't sell you on something that leaves you exposed, because she's been the person who was exposed. The flood. The car accident. The moment when the policy you thought you had doesn't show up the way you needed it to.

"I want you to feel like when you're done talking to me — whether you purchase with me or not — you know more than when you came in. Because everybody thinks insurance is a scam. It's not that you have to have it. It's something that's going to protect you. And you don't realize it until you actually need it."

That moment of realization — when a client's face changes and the light bulb comes on — is what Shay lives for. It's her aha moment. It's why she keeps coming back to this work, no matter what else has been happening in her life.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR SKG

Shay opened SKG Insurance on April 6, 2026 — just days after navigating a major life transition. She did it anyway. She works from home right now, building her client base, getting her systems in place, and dreaming of the next chapter.

That chapter has a very specific shape: a brick-and-mortar location where clients can walk in, pick up their ID cards, sit down with her face to face. Where she can hug them. Where they can stop by just to say hi.

"I'm a hugger. It's different when you can feel the energy. That's why I want my brick and mortar — I want to be able to touch my clients. I want that connection."

She's also thinking about workshops. She attended a homeownership and financial literacy event in Fort Worth and came away lit up — seeing an insurance professional who looked like her, with a slideshow and real knowledge, talking to a room full of people who needed exactly what she had to offer. "Okay," she told herself afterward. "That could be me."

"I feel like this is my purpose. Helping people. Educating people. Getting people back home."

It took a long road — a longer and harder one than most people will ever know — to get to that clarity. But Shay Greene is here. She is open for business. And she is exactly the kind of agent that Texas families deserve.
